Arsenal's in irresistible form and complete a grand slam, being at the top of every table, scoring for fun and keeping clean sheets. How long can this continue for? Newcastle finally off the bottom after seeing off Wolves at St James's
Arsenal unsurprisingly remain top after demolishing Sheffield United at Bramall Lane and open such a huge gap to second, that nothing short of an unlikely humiliation against Brentford this weekend will seer them slip in the near future. Staying in the top half, Chelsea, despite only drawing at the weekend remain in 5th as their run of matches returned a very low expected form co-efficient, which they have out performed, but there's plenty of sides that would be well about them if they weren't pegged as a mid table side.
The biggest move up this week is Newcastle as they finally found some form at home and disappointing older results slip away. Man United and Brighton fans won't be particularly pleased with their spots in the bottom 5, but they're still performing significantly worse than expected and need to find a string of results.
Let's break that form down a bit below.
Arsenal finally hit the top as their rampant form shows no sign of slowing down. Chelsea, Fulham and Wolves keep Spurs, Villa and Man United out of the top 6 as they outperform their mid-table billings. Only two sides remain unmoved this week, Sheffield United and Burnley, but nether were expected to win and the sides sandwiched between them had disappointing showings last weekend.
It's still goals, goals, goals as 196 were expected in the last 7 match weeks, but fans have been treated to 254, meaning that only 5 sides have underperformed against their expected goal return, and the biggest surprise is that Man City remain one of those 5. Only a little under with 14 goals returned against 15 expected, but Arsenal also expected 15 and scored 31, so the table feels well deserved. Newcastle will be pleased to be in the top 4 here as despite their reported issues with injuries up front, they still continue to find the net, being only behind the Gunners and Liverpool in actual goals scored. Everton and Burnley's form in front of goal look worrying with only 5 scored;- less than one a game in a season where defenses look particularly generous.
Things look better for Everton in terms of goals conceded, as despite slipping off the top, they remain in the top 3. Arsenal complete the grand-slam with only 3 goals find their way through in the last 7 matches. Man City also have a reversal here as they are in the top 4, but Burnley are near the bottom and it spells a worrying trend which will likely see them return swiftly to the Championship next season. Newcastle are off the bottom but only just as the highly porous nature of Sheffield United's defence at home bites them.
